It’s hard to think of Grateful Dead music without thinking about the culture and aesthetic
that shaped the band and continues to define its appeal. At its core, the music is rooted
in the American tradition—folk, blues, jazz, and bluegrass—expanded through extended improvisational “jams” and the spirit of exploration that defined the era.
It felt natural—almost inevitable—that a symphony orchestra would embrace the opportunity to experience and reinterpret this music in its own way. The challenge was creating a visual identity for the concert that honored the band’s legacy while also reflecting the orchestra’s unique artistry and audience.
The design needed to connect two worlds: the devoted Grateful Dead faithful, with their deep connection to the band’s culture and imagery, and symphony audiences who might be experiencing this music from a completely new perspective. The goal was to capture the spirit of the Dead without relying on the familiar symbols and visual language that have surrounded the band for decades.
The final poster aimed to reflect the energy of the experience—the improvisation, collaboration, community, and sense of discovery—creating something that felt less like
a tribute and more like a new chapter in the ongoing journey of the music.
