Seneca Chief Line Boat Illustration by Michael Gelen/ Inkwell Studios
The Erie Canal was the marvel of its time. From New York City looking west,
Buffalo stood as the ultimate destination—the final stop. As the western terminus
of the canal, Buffalo experienced explosive growth, becoming a gateway
for those headed further west.
The idea was simple yet powerful: How could we accomplish two things at once? Celebrate Buffalo as a bold, dynamic, and rapidly growing city—and chart a course toward a future that might transform our fortunes.
The illustration depicts the Seneca Chief line boat, which carried then-Governor DeWitt Clinton from Buffalo to New York City with a barrel of Lake Erie water.
This symbolic act became known as the "Wedding of the Waters," uniting the
Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean via the Erie Canal.
The various characters on board represent individuals with significant ties
to Buffalo’s development. Together, they help set the stage for future storytelling and educational programming rooted in the city’s rich history.
