The Western New York Book Arts Center—known simply as “Book Arts”— is a community
print shop and studio celebrating the craft and culture of bookmaking. Offering letterpress, screen printing, bookbinding, papermaking, calligraphy, origami, and more, it operates
as a working museum, blending historic tools and techniques with contemporary
creative practices.
When tasked with reimagining Book Arts’ brand identity, two key inspirations emerged:
the wood and metal type of traditional letterpress and the form of the book itself.
The resulting mark reflects one or both, depending on the viewer’s perspective. Grounded in a deep respect for the legacy of print, the identity favors clarity and authenticity over
visual gimmicks.
Though letterpress may not traditionally suggest energy or motion, a growing movement of artists is breathing new life into the medium. Book Arts reflects this momentum through its programs and public presence. To echo that spirit, we developed custom wall coverings based on the new mark—dynamic patterns that evoke the rhythm of a press in motion.
A cohesive system of mark variations, typefaces, and supporting patterns presents
Book Arts as both a creative hub and a responsible steward of the public and grant funding that sustains its mission.
